Position Title: Editorial Intern
Reports to: Cassie Norton, Associate Publisher
Pay: Unpaid Internship.
Requirements: Academic credit required. Minimum commitment of 16 hours per week.

Timeframe:
Winter: January to May
Summer: June to August
Fall: September to December

Minimum Requirements: Intern must be enrolled at time of internship at an institution of higher learning that has an established internship program. Additionally, must be a student with a major or course concentration appropriate to facilitating the goals and needs of our editorial department (i.e., journalism, English, etc), and should have completed, at minimum, basic introductory course work in that academic major or concentration. Applicants must have operational understanding of Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Outlook; excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work independently and efficiently on concurrent projects: and be able to work collaboratively with the editorial team.

Core Competencies: Ideal candidate should be web-savvy, a proficient writer, creative thinker, well organized, have a strong work ethic, be adaptable to change, and have good time-management skills in order to meet stringent deadlines. Interest or experience in real estate a plus.

Primary Functions / Principle Duties: The objective of your internship with us will be to gain practical experience in a 21st-century newsroom. Our news outlets offer a broad range of content across a variety of media, including print, broadcast and online, and you will contribute to most, if not all of them. You will have the opportunity to work with us in producing our weekly newspapers, websites updated daily and breaking news coverage as it happens.

Working with the entire editorial team at The Warren Group, you will learn the fundamentals of modern business reporting, including event coverage, developing story ideas, and cultivating sources. We will also teach you the basics of journalism, including writing for the web and online content management, as well as basic digital photography skills and multimedia presentation production. You will be able to observe how different departments within the company inter-relate and, schedule permitting, you may attend some departmental meetings. In addition to working with the Associate Publisher, who will be primarily responsible for the oversight of your training and supervision during your internship, you will also work closely with the Managing Editor.

Overall, your internship at The Warren Group is designed to provide you with experience and valuable training relevant to your interest in exploring business journalism.

You will have the opportunity to work on an array of initiatives during your internship at The Warren Group, by performing the following primary functions and principle duties (not inclusive):
• Write for print, web and online content – Must be able to produce stories written in a clear and concise manner;
• Rewrite press releases;
• Assist reporters in researching/writing stories;
• Edit/produce/arrange multimedia presentation for videos and photo galleries;
• Produce photography;
• May occasionally travel to off-site locations, contingent on written permission from school.

Through your work during your internship, you should expect to accumulate meaningful news clips, both print and online, which you can bring to prospective future employers as examples of competent journalistic work.

Working Conditions: Work location will be at The Warren Group offices located at 2 Corporation Way, Suite 250, Peabody MA 01960. Intern working hours will be within the normal operating hours of The Warren Group – Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excepting company holidays. With written authorization from academic internship supervisor, this schedule may occasionally vary to accommodate off-site and/or off-hour assignments. Ideally, this position will work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Duration and exact schedule will be determined when internship is confirmed.
