Data Journalist

The Warren Group is seeking a reporter who likes telling stories with data and has an interest in business for our industry-leading suite of newspapers.

The reporter will combine data analysis and traditional reporting to identify and write enterprise stories and spearhead the creation of special sections derived from The Warren Group’s data products.

If you want to know where developers get their money, a ring-side seat on the business trends that shape how Greater Boston works and a hand in reinventing a storied, 150-year-old real estate news brand, then we are looking for you.

Summary:

The position is ideal for an early- to mid-career journalist who’s eager to learn new skills while being given room to stretch their wings.

Your beat will be Massachusetts’ lending and residential real estate markets. You’ll look at the world through a finance lens, mining our parent company’s industry-leading database of real estate transactions and loans, as well as digging for public data sets, in order to spot trends and stories that matter to people who direct flows of money around. You’ll also be interviewing movers and shakers to add color and nuance as you hunt for ways to explain the data.

This role demands the ability to write clean copy, analyze data, make complicated topics accessible to non-specialists, spot trends and stay ahead of the news.

Essential responsibilities include the following:

  • Analyze The Warren Group’s proprietary real estate transaction and mortgage data to produce current special sections.
  • Receive assignments, identify and pitch market trend stories and stories about specific financial institutions using The Warren Group’s proprietary data, as well as third-party data sources like financial regulators or other government entities.
  • Cultivate a network of sources among key industry stakeholders to inform your reporting and data analysis, including in-person interviews and attendance at some industry events.
  • Produce briefs for inclusion in daily newsletters covering the local real estate and lending sectors.
  • Report, write and gather accompanying graphics as needed in a timely manner while meeting deadlines.

Our newsroom’s core values:

A family-owned company, The Warren Group prides itself on treating its employees well, and trusting them to do their jobs well if given room to do so. In our newsroom, this means:

  • We value everyone’s unique background and the perspective they bring to their work.
  • Many decisions are made collaboratively, your feedback is listened to and we are always eager to hear reporters’ coverage and product ideas.
  • Part of your editor’s job is to support your success.
  • You will be treated as the expert on your beat – but that means you’ll also be challenged to live that out.
  • Humane hours: No late nights, no early mornings and some flexibility to work around family and personal commitments.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of journalism experience, in finance or banking industries a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Proven experience producing data-driven stories in a newsroom.
  • Portfolio of published articles that demonstrate rigor, curiosity and ambition.
  • Experience doing research using multiple sources.
  • Familiarity with web publishing best practices.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Hands-on experience with content management systems.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects.

This position is full-time, exempt and remote. However, some meetings and events will require in-person attendance. Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though it may vary to accommodate attendance at meetings and events.
