Timothy Matlack Warren Sr., chairman of The Warren Group, died peacefully on Dec. 21, 2012, at the age of 89 at his home in Topsham, Maine, surrounded by his wife and family.

His son, Timothy M. Warren Jr., said his father’s passing has left the family broken hearted, but proud of a glorious and happy life of service and accomplishment. The elder Warren led an active life in business, community service and in spiritual service. He was diagnosed in January with a progressive blood disorder, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).

Warren was lauded for his actions that set the publishing company bearing his name onto stable financial footing and turned the flagship publication Banker & Tradesman into a powerhouse. He insisted on a level of quality and forward-thinking that helped reshape the information available to the real estate community.

“He was a visionary,” said Steve Sousa, president of the Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Appraisers and a former Warren Group vice president. “He built an incredible organization, and he knew what he needed to do to secure the future.”

Warren was born on Dec. 9, 1923 in New Canaan, Conn., the son of Keith Faulkner Warren and Barbara Matlack Warren. He was raised in New Canaan and then in Lovell, Maine, where his family moved in 1930, seeking a simpler and more tranquil lifestyle.

He joined the family business in 1948, after serving in World War II and completing his education at Bowdoin College in Maine. He started as a printer’s apprentice, eventually becoming president and publisher. Since 1988, he has been chairman of the board of The Warren Group.

Despite declining mobility this year, Warren enjoyed a good quality of life in his final months, spending Thanksgiving dinner with family, including his great-grandchildren in Camden, Maine, said Timothy Warren Jr., the current CEO and publisher of The Warren Group.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Phyllis Faber Warren, and three children, Timothy Matlack Warren, Jr. of Cambridge; Elizabeth Faulkner Warren-White of South Freeport, Maine; and Peter Grenelle Warren of Camden, Maine. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Sarah Russell Wentworth and Deborah Nichols Warren; one son-in-law, Nathaniel Morton Warren-White; and six grandchildren, Joshua Marcus Warren-White and his partner, Maria Poblet; Jessica Millar Warren Kyle and her husband, Daniel Kyle; Tyler Keith Warren and his wife, Sarah Cunningham Warren; Mariah Matlack Warren, Keith Wentworth Warren and Eliza Russell Warren. Warren had the joy of recently welcoming two young great-grandchildren to the family, Bennett Kyle and Lucy Kyle. Warren leaves three AFS “children,” several cousins, nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, numerous godchildren and countless friends.

A memorial service in celebration of Warren’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 at the First Parish, 20 Lexington Road, Concord.
